I've had this problem for some time. I know others have had it too, but can't
find a thread in these newsgroups about it. Help please...

Shutdown issues are generally caused by a program and/or process that is
refusing to exit gracefully. The program and/or process can be from malware
or can be legitimate (such as an invasive antivirus like Norton or McAfee).
If you are using a Norton or McAfee product, uninstall it and replace with
a better program such as NOD32, Kasperksy, or Avast (free). The Windows
Firewall is adequate for most people.

A.The first step is always to make sure your computer is virus/malware free.

B. If the computer is virus/malware-free, drivers are current, and no Norton
or McAfee programs are installed, then do clean-boot troubleshooting to see
which program/process is the culprit:

C. If you need more information, here is an excellent shutdown
troubleshooter:

Standard caveat: If troubleshooting the issue is too difficult - and there
is absolutely no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the
machine to a computer repair shop. This will not be your local
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Get recommendations from family,
friends, colleagues.

Thank you for the advice. I do run McAfee AV on my PCs, notebooks, etc and am
hesitant to remove it (or Norton which is the standard AV on my work PCs). I
believe they may be the culprit, since i regularly update these programs and
run scans for adware/malware/etc and they find nothing. Someone is one of the
forums discussed running a short program script that effectively sets
conditions to proceed with a shut-down regardless of any programs still
running that "are not responding". It was supposed to eliminate the annoying
"hang up" during shut-down, without getting at the problem why
servicehost.defaultGrp was not responding. Any other suggestions, apart from
removing McAfee and Norton AV programs?

Thanks,
Rob

Do the clean-boot troubleshooting and find out for sure if Norton/McAfee are
causing the issue or something else. Once you find out which program is
causing the problem, you can take the troubleshooting from there or contact
the program mftr.'s tech support.
