My Win2000 server crashed while installing SP4 and I had to restart it. Now
I cannot login - it is stuck on Applying Windows ______ before the login box
pops up.

Any ideas? It will not get past that if I select Safe Mode either. I have
also tried to boot to the last known good config.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike,

It is a serious problem that the Windows crashed when you applied the
service pack. The service pack program will update your system kernel files
and related information to keep it update. When the computer crashes in
service pack installation, the system files will not be completely update.
Some files would be corrupted and some would be inconsistent. Thus, Windows
will not be able to successfully boot.

In this case, the most efficient way is to in-place upgrade Windows 2000
and then to reapply service pack 4. Refer to the following article:

292175 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=292175

When you install service pack 4 next time, please stop unwanted services
and applications in order to make it run smoothly. Please let me know if
this solves this issue or if you need further assistance. I look forward to
hearing from you.
