I finally got a hold of my parents' computer today and noticed that it had
pending updates. The update was the SP2. I tried to download and install the
update, but it didn't go through. I'm guessing because it didn't have enough
memory. I tried to use the computer afterwards anyway, but it froze up. I
restarted the computer and it wouldn't get past the black XP screen (I'm sure
you know what I'm talking about). I decided to reinstall Windows XP. It would
not let me do that because it did not have enough memory in either partition
(FAT and N...). I've never come across that problem before. It asked me if I
wanted to format the partition. I said no. I don't know what to do. Can
someone help?

I've looked for help on the site. It tells me I need to an automatic
recovery, but I don't know the administrator's password.

Leah49,

First check the log files listed under the "Service Pack 2 installation
log files" heading for error messages. The system *may* need a hardware
update for an incompatibility with the Processor, video adapter, etc.
If it was manufactured by an OEM (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc), then check on
the manufacturer's web site for the requirements/hardware updates needed
to install SP2.

Then read these articles prior to attempting to install SP2 :

If at all possible, suggest downloading the entire SP2 package and
Saving it :

Or, you can order the CD and just pay shipping -

If you choose the above route, then you can safely delete the contents
of WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Downloads
And, if it was created, WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles
