My auotmatic updates today asked me to install
the "Service Pack 2" and I checked OK but no installation
took place. I went to the Download page and it said, "only
available via "Automatic Updates" which I had and do have
turned on. Is there a way to check on this or install
them? Thank you Tom

Tom..
I had the same thing happen. I am wondering if we should
delay in installing this. Have there been problems after
the installation?

I have had just the same thing happen, I guess we wait to see if it appears
again.

Tom;
What are the last 20 line of the update log?
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log

Michael;
I was just informed this seems only to be an issue when you select
"Notify me..." in Automatic Update and they are working on it.
Select the other Automatic Update option and see if it works.
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab
Select "Automatic Recommended"
Click OK and follow prompts

I had the same problem as Tom, and I don't have "Notify Me..." as my
selection; I had/have it set on Automatic Update. Automatic Updates popped
up last night, told me it was going to download SP2, I said "OK," then
nothing happened. When I go to my Installation History on the Updates page,
it does not show SP2, but apparently the Automatic Update now considers me to
have already received the update because it says I don't need any updates. I
don't see any other way to access it now that Automatic Updates tried and
failed to download/install SP2.

I have always found Automatic Update to be flaky. Half the time it works,
the other other half it doesn't and I have to go to the Updates page. With
SP2 only available on Automatic Update we are somewhat stuck :-)

Automatic Update alerted me about SP2 yesterday. I clicked on "Download
Now" and it vanished for ever :-)

Libby;
I have just gotten some contradictory information from someone else.
I have asked for clarification but do not expect an answer until at
least morning Washington time.

Have Washington woken up yet?

John;
I recently got the correct answer after a long series of Emails with
several people.
This is all by design.
Microsoft is limiting daily the number of SP-1 installations through
Automatic Update.
Once you press Download it is a waiting game with no indication of how
long.
See FAQ #7:

Thanks for your efforts in finding this information. I have to say that I
am not totally convinced. (Based on my previous experience with this
phenomenon on earlier updates). We shall have to wait and see if anything
happens :-)

I too have Automatic Updates set with nothing else set and it indicated that
there was an update (SP2), which I downloaded. However, at the end of the
download, when I tried to install, it didn't. I got the following error
stored in ReportingEvents.log under windows/SoftwareDistribution:
