I installed SP 2 from the Microsoft website, but my system information
still reads, "Service Pack 1, Build 2600." I tried to reinstall SP2,
but got the message that it was already installed. Is there a way to
uninstall SP2 and then reinstall it? I'm thinking that the initial
installation was incomplete.

Hello
I don't know if that can or should be done, but have you tried to go to Windows Update and see if it tells you if you need any updates critical or other wise? It might provide you a clue. Usually the updates that you do have are listed in your add and remove programs and under the update site under history. I would be careful about removing the updates you already have in your add and remove area.

I looked at add/remove and the history of updates, and SP2 doesn't
appear. But when I click updates for service packs, I get zero
available. I did go through the installation of SP2, but as I said it
doesn't appear on System Information. Also, all the updates that MS
says are available for my computer are updates to SP1. I guess even if
I tried to uninstall SP2, I would get the message that it's not on my
computer....

The last time I checked SP2 for XP was only available as a beta download for
Beta testers...
and as such had their on "help" section
