We recently puchased a second hand comp that already has
windows xp pro on it.We have been trying to download
service pack 1 but with no success. An error comes up and
says that I need a product key number. I think this
software may be a burnt copy of windows xp. Microsoft
said that I could purchase a license. Is there any other
way around this. If not where can I purchase this licence
from & what is the cost. Any help would be appreciated.

The copy of Pro on the computer you bought is probably an illegal one.
There are many discount web sites where you can purchase a legal copy
of pro, however, be sure you really need the Pro version. The Home
version of XP is much less expensive and is the same except for
certain networking features and security options.

The MS web site is a good place to learn the differences between the
two so you can determine which version is right for you.
