Does anyone know of a good FREEWARE mail server. Would it be possible
to permit access to it from the web? For example, would it be able to
use a free service to which it can permit people to access my
mailserver from a sub domain?

You might check out http://www.pmail.com/ - or Postfix or Sendmail. Much
depends on what you want to run it on, etc.
