Server Shutdown

Does anyone know if Microsoft recommends a shutdown
procedure of servers (say once a week, with a five min
down period) for maximum performance? I have never heard
this before but would be interested to see where I might
find this recommendation if it is true.

I have never heard of anything like that. However I have found that for really busy servers with third party apps it is
can be wise to do a reboot once a month (just straight reboot doesn't need to stay down) during a maintenance window to
help clear up any resource leaks the apps might have. Of course the proper way is to find the leaks and work with the
Vendor but generally as an admin you don't have that kind of time unless the problem is so blatent you have to spend a
lot of time on it already.
