Server Service

When I boot my XP machine all programs load and all
appears to be fine. If I click on Internet Explorer
nothing happens for several mins up to half an hour
however I see IEXPLORE in the task manager list as if it
had started. By using the services panel I tracked this
problem down to be the server service as it always
says "starting" while this "hang" is occuring.
Well now i know the root of the problem so I set the
service to restart after each failure by using the
services panel, recovery tab. This only helped to
decrease how long the "hang" lasted.
Im guessing I need to reinstall that service but Iam not
quite sure how to go about it can anyone point me in the
right direction?

Hi,

Try this first:
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll, press the Enter key and then regsvr32 shdocvw.dll, press the Enter key.
Then reboot.

If the symptom persists:

Try reinstalling IE, click start/run and copy/paste this command, then click "ok":

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

If you have installed SP1, you may need to browse to get the correct path for a necessary file in the service pack files folder during the installation process; also have you XP CD ready on hand.

Usually, the path should be in C:\windows\Service Pack Files\i386

Hope it helps.

First. Make sure of these settings and nothing will install without you
answering YES. (Except what may install as part of some other software.)

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
Make sure both of these are NOT checked.

Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)

perform a particular task.]]

 Enable Install On Demand (Other)

Thanks for trying but these suggestions did not work.

I dont think its a problem with IE unless the server
service is part of IE that is beyond me.

I think What im trying to figure out is how to "refresh"
a windows program without doing a whole restore and
without using the xp restore. This has been going on for
a month it would be hard to pin down the restore point. I
really can't relate the start of the problem to anything
(ie. major system changes, installs ETC.) I know this can
be done, I just cannot recall how to do it due to the
fact it's not a routine thing for me.

Thanks for any suggestions I am trying them all. :)

Sorry, but that isn't a fix for me. I run AdAware, spybot
zonealarm and norton 2004 always on, always updated,
scanned weekly. Its easier to avoid that crap than to
clean up the mess later. I have a ISP provided filter on
my email account befor it even gets to me. I keep my
puter clean. Id say Im safer than most common users.

The settings you suggest turning off, were already off.

I appreciate all suggestions Thanks.
