server profiles: settings lost

Hi,

I have server profiles for backup purposes (data on the server is backed up
automatically) since 2 months.

I use my profile only at one computer.

But very often some settings are NOT saved although I sign off
successfully. This are values that are saved in the registry (ntuser.dat).

Settings that are often not saved include:
- Settings (COM ports for ActiveSync, ...) from Bluetooth stack
- Tablet settings (it's a tablet pc)
- settings from the task bar

I can't reproduce the problem: The data is saved but the next time the data
MAY be away.

I did not have the problem when I used local profiles.

Is there a setting that settings are ALWAYS - *ALWAYS* saved?

It's not possible to work this way, when I have no idea if settings are
saved or not.

Thank you

Peter

Roaming profile on a Tablet PC? (Least it sounds like that is what you are
saying.)
Sounds like a chancy proposition anyway.

Things not getting saved on roaming profiles can be a factor of the network.
For a tablet PC - that will most likely be wireless - I would not choose to
utilize roaming profiles. It's not worth the trouble.

Files and directories - sure. Profiles.. nope.

No! That's not the problem!

I said that settings are *sometimes* not saved although there is *no*
error message!

I only sign on/off when the tablet is docked (gigabit connection to
server!!) or when windows crashed on the road.

Then I get the message that windows won't save my settings but windows
sometimes does not save settings when I'm docked!!!

No wirless connection!!

You read too much detail into my response..

Roaming profiles are known to do this on occassion for a variety of
reasons.. I don't care if you are directly connected to the server on a dual
redundant gigabit network and there can be no other traffic because it is
just you and the server in a quiet room.. Any network glitch, any
strangeness when transferring and the transfer just silently doesn't happen.
There is no "magic setting" - although you can try to tweak timeouts and
such - no matter what - you will see this again - more than likely - with a
roaming profile setup.

You can usually tell when this happened because you can log into the machine
locally and notice (if you have set the profiles to remove at logoff) the
profile is still there on the local machine (not everyone does this deletion
thing - I guess I was used to it with 40,000+ users.)

If you want reliability of the settings - you will have to use a local
profile and start backing up your system periodically. You even said it
yourself.
I did not have the problem when I used local profiles.

Yep.. That's because you did not have to worry about transferring the files
to an external machine over a network - the settings were saved the instant
you made them on the machine you were on. You brought yourself into the
world of roaming profiles for backup reasons - but there are better ways to
backup your system - in my opinion. =)
