Update - Server move is complete already - with only 2.5 mins downtime.

There is a server move to a brand spanking new dedicated Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz server tonight which should be able to cope with the server demands for the foreseeable future :)

The current server is a 2.4Ghz Celeron, so this should be a big improvement on server loads - which are currently at 70% average.

An extra bonus of the new server is a fully automated backup system which has been installed, allowing up to a months incremental backups available for the site should the worst happen.

There was a bit of a mess up with some newsgroups appearing in the main section of the site - thanks to everyone who pointed this out ;) I've now removed them and they should now be confined to the test section!

BACK-UP is in place ...

Zoom zoom ... here we go. :thumb:

:D

The Rocket Scientist is finally taking off with all of us onboard :D

I'm still crossing me fingers :D

Looking forward to the 'new and improved' site :)

Haha, this is it running now ;) It is more of a behind the scenes improvement - very little difference on the surface I'm afraid :D

It should be slightly faster, less flakey, able to maintain performance underload (big problem before) and includes a very reliable backup system (40GB off site daily incremental backup!).

Really? oops :o

Well, it's certainly running fine, that's for sure :)

Now that you mention it, it does take less time for the drop down menus to appear when first logging on.

I must say it is about the same speed here.

I did notice one thing however, you moved from having PCR hosted in the UK to having it hosted in the USA.

What prompted this change?

:p

It was hosted in the UK about a year ago, but it was much more expensive compared to in the US. For the price paid for the dedicated server hosted in the UK, an equivilent UK server would be much slower. I trialed a company in London for a few weeks, and they were very friendly, but the server just wasn't fast enough.

Well,

You done it the hard way, i just done a 'tracert' in command prompt to pcreview.co.uk and as the ping was over 75ms i knew it was in the USA.

Uk Pings are generally between 15-45
Usa Pings are generally between 75-200+

A ping is generally the time taken to query a server for the website, so if you enter 'www.pcreview.co.uk' into a web browser, it queries the server for a reply first, and that's what the message 'website found, waiting for a reply' is, it's checking to see if the website is available first before it sends requests for individual pages and components for the website.

Chris,

cool thanks guys

just tried cmd and typed in tracert with some websites

some next stuff coms up!:)

5 mins downtime just now - the automatic database backup is causing problems (namely it doesn't work), so I am doing it manually until the tech support people get it fixed at their end.

The people at 'The Planet' are generally helpful but you get the odd one which is a pain in the arse,

Hope things get sorted soon Ian :)

I've got them working on the backup problem at the moment, apparently its a "known issue" - so I expect everything should be sorted soon.
