Uncle Grumpy

Finished building a new computer from scratch this afternoon. Pulled
the main drive from my old machine and installed it ( repair install)
in the NEW machine with great hopes and expectations.

CAN'T ACTIVATE IT because "the server is down". Tried Internet
activation, no way. Got the "down" message during an attempt at voice
activation.

NO WAY.

This really sucks.

Sorry to hear it, friend, but I'm not sure I see a question in here. I
haven't tried to activate anything today. I'd try again and see what
happens.

Thanks for the story, Grumpy, so what is your question for the group:-)
And they will not answer the phone - its the weekend.

Call one of the other "English" speaking locales, say United Kingdom
or Australia. Can't image country of origin would block access.

The rep I talked to AFTER the automated call didn't work (after
Internet activation disn't work) sounded DEFINITELY like an Aussie.

I'm lucky that my original oldie-moldie machine is still intact.

Am planning on it.

Is it really that much of a problem waiting until Monday? After all,
everything is working, right?

This is rarely an activation server issue.
Instead it is usually something on the other end such as a improperly
configured firewall, spyware, virus or other malware.

If you have a 3rd party firewall:
First enable the Windows Firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283673
Then disable the 3rd party firewall.
Try to activate again.
This will help determine if it is a firewall issue.

This time it WAS a server issue JJ - not a screwup on my part. I was
TOLD by a PERSON - not a machine - that the server was down and that I
should call back in an hour.

I called back two hours later, and got activated immediately.

But it's broken. I might have to do a clean install and scramble
around looking for installation files and registration info to install
all those goodies I've amassed over the years.

Part of my problem was that I'm running IE7. IE doesn't even work on
the new setup (I used a slipstreamed version of the install that
included SP2 to do the repair install).

I'm going to change everything on the disk I'm now running on my old
machine and re-clone, and start over to see if I can salvage anything.

Doesn't say much for Microsoft, their programming & their server
maintenance, does it?
Regards Mike.

Gee, why so many "msvp" people claim that it "only takes 5 minutes" for
activation?

Maybe the m$ is doing a CLEAN INSTALL on their server?

and I just wonder if the msvp people will continue to claim that it
"only takes 5 minutes or less" to activate.

and situation still inspire the msvp to state that it is the user's
fault in the install or their equipment; it is never a microsoft
problem.

Who ever said "it is never a microsoft problem"
Please cite the specific reference.

And for me activation almost always takes less than a minute.
About 5 minutes or less if I have to call.

What is "msvp"

I couldn't care less about your experience. I'm talking about MY
experience, in case you didn't notice.

I did several more re-installs and finally succeeded in getting a
"phone" reinstall code without having to talk to a human.

And this specific post of mine was not addressed to you.
I was asking plew for a specific sources, which is probably nonexistent.
But I am waiting...
