Server based rules in Outlook XP

We are a Exchange 2000 site, running Outlook XP client.

Some users can invoke a rule that enables server based
replies. Many others can not - getting the ubiquitous and
utterly useless error message "you don't have appropriate
permission to perform this operation".

The only KBA I can find is 316536 which says "Exchange
Server cannot perform the "Have server reply with
specific message" Inbox rule if you change the mailbox
that is indicated in the From box" and offers two
completely useless "workarounds" - ie have a client based
rule or acquire third party software.

If the rule breaks because the "From" field is changed,
then how do you "unchange" this field??

Can anyone offer any advice, or is this just buggy
software?

regards...

Thanks Sue, but I'm way beyond that.
I am trying to create an automatic reply to any mail that
comes into a mailbox
The rule does not create as this error prevents creation.
Therefore each attempt to create the rule is a new
attempt, and so no template is built. And each attempt
gets the same response.

I can't tell from your message exactly how you've gone about creating these
rules. If you want to create a reply rule for a particular mailbox, you need
to be running Outlook with a profile that connects to that mailbox directly,
not as a secondary mailbox. And as the KB article implies, you cannot
"spoof" the From address of the reply template to try to make the replies to
that mailbox look like they're coming from some other address.
