Dear people,

I needed to re-install xp pro on NTFS. But I had some
folders that were encrypted. Now they are not accessable
anymore.
It seems that the key that is now installed with xp
doesn't correspont with the one the files are encrypted
with. So my problem is that I can't access the files
anymore. Is there anyone who can help me with this?
Regards,

Gijs

Regards,

Gijs,

If you did not backup/export the relevant encryption keys (either yours or
the recover agent - if you created one) then those files will not be
accessible.

Do you have a full backup of the user account profile prior to your
reinstall ?

Mike,

No i did not. But there must be a way to get those files
decrypted again i assume?

No..your files are gone forever without the key. The strength of the
encryption algorithm is such that it cannot be broken. You must *ALWAYS*
make a backup of your encryption key, and keep it safe.

An encryption system where you could decrypt the files easily without the
appropriate keys is not much use.
The encryption techniques used (a combination of symmetric and asymmetric
key techniques) results in a fast and strong system.
It is not possible to access those files without access to significant
computing resources to attempt a brute force crack of the appropriate Data
Decryption Field.

There are numerous documents available about the creation of a recovery key
and the procedures for the export and import of the those keys.
