SERIOUS Problem after updating

After completing the recent update and rebooting, I can't start up Windows.

Using XP Professional. After booting I get a black screen and a white mouse. Nothing else. It won't go past this. I tried safe mode. Get the same thing but with Safe in each corner and 2600 in the top. I saw a post from someone else on another techsite who had the exact same symptoms, he ended up reformatting!

More info:
This morning I installed and ran Spybot (think I have the name right), not sure if I rebooted after this. It found 5 items, which I removed. Later tonight I installed the latest MS update. Rebooted, and all my problems started.

Even tried reinstalling XP, same thing happens. No idea what to do now. I don't want to reformat.

Any ideas?
