I just got a serial ATA hard drive. The motherboard I
also bought came with drivers for the hard drive for
various versions of Windows. I was able to load both Win
2000 Pro and Win XP with no problems. (I was not able to
use the drivers -at the point when it asks if there are
any 3rd party devices- when I tried installing 2000. A
message saying that a file had caused an error appeared
and I just continued with the install to see what would
happen). I did not even try the drivers with XP.
Do these OS's come with the necessary drivers for this
type of hard drive?

thanks

Hello

You do not need a driver for the harddrive, you need a
driver for the ATA controller, and your mother comes
with a cdrom that has those drivers, or you can download
them from the manufacturer's website. You will need to copy
those drivers onto a floppy also

Hi Murphy

You don't actually seem to be having a problem.
You say "I was able to load both Win2000 Pro and Win XP with no problems."

Check the mainboard manual and see which SATA controller you have connected
the hard drive to..
*fully* integrated controllers can utilise the standard IDE drivers included
on the XP CD.

Hope that helps

Seeing as how the hard drives were introduced well after the operating
system was introduced, I would have to say NO! Get the drivers from the
manufacturer of the M/B or the hard drive.
