My question is has anyone setup their Windows XP to run off a SATA
drive and was there any performance improvement over installing to the EIDE
drive?

Yep

Was there any performance improvement over installing tothe EIDE drive?

Well, let's see now...

IDE = 7.2krpm maximum
SATA = 10K - 15K RPM

IDE = Read Seek Time (Average) 8.9 ms
Write Seek Time (Average) 10.9 ms (average)

SATA = Read Seek Time (Average) 4.5 ms
Write Seek Time (Average) 5.9 ms (average)

The above are based on a WD Caviar and a WD Raptor - I think you can answer
your own question now... ;o)

In theory, it should be faster, and benchmarks should show the difference,
but there is also the question of which IDE and SATA drives you're
installing. You could manage to have a clunky old drive connected to the
SATA and a new fast IDE.

Also, whether you notice a difference or not depends on what you're doing.
Operations that require reading and writing to the drive will be faster, but
if it's a memory and/or processor intensive app, it's not going to make a
difference.
