Vista does not have Outlook Express - do you mean you have Windows Mail?
If so, what difficulty are you experiencing in sending attachments?

I don't think you can do that from withing Office, since Office depends upon
Outlook. Try composing a new message in WinMail and then attach the xls
file when the file is not open in Excel.

Not true. Documents can be sent from within Office using Thunderbird....

I can not remember 100% reliably how the situation was with Outlook
Express but think to remember that the situation would not have have
been any different from what I have now with WinMail.

With WinMail there is no problem at all to send an Excel document (as
well as documents from other Office apps).
When WinMail is set as the default mail-client, clicking on "Send" and
then "mail" opens a WinMail standard form for creating a mail message
and the XLS file is hanging in it as an attachment.

It's just the same with the other Office apps.

Err no - YOU said "Office depends on Outlook" which is not true.
