Sending Word Doc. as attachments

When I try to send a Word Doc as an attachment the other person receives the
attachment as an *.DAT file. Why is this hapenning?

Sounds like you're using Rich Text as your message format. Change it to HTML
or plain text.

Because you're sending the message in Rich Text format, which mail clients
other than Outlook can't read.
 
I am using plain text format but still when I send a Word.doc attachment my
attachment is sending a garbbled message.
 
I am sending my attachments as a word.doc and I have my Outlook formatted to
use plain text, but my attachments are garbbled junk.
