Sending email from other programs doesn't actually send the message

When I try to send email from eg. IE6, I can compose and then send the
email (using word as my editor), but it does not actually send the
mail unless Outlook is open. Instead, it puts the message in the
outbox until I open Outlook and then it will get send with a
send/receive. This happens when I click on mailto: links or if I
select Send.. from the File menu. Outlook is my default client. Is
there any way to get the messages sent without having to open Outlook.
I find this to be a pain, especially if you forget to do it and then
find out the next day that the message was never sent.

Thank you.

Alter OL mail settings to check for mail every x mins, not less than 10min,
and send mail settings

Hi DL,

Thanks for your help. Which settings are you refering to? I have
changed the send/receive settings to be 15 minutes each (both online
and offline) and this has made no difference as far as I can tell. Is
there any reason to have them set not less than 10 minutes? Is there
any way to have it sent immediately? Thanks

You can set mail to send immediately, allthough 'immediate' may not be
instant!
For check mail option, if set to less than 10 mins this can cause
resource/sys problems, its unaffected by sys ram.

Perfectly normal.

No. Outlook must be running in order to send the mail. Why not just start
it at boot time and leave it running?

1) Make sure Outlook is running.
2) Select the "Send immediately" option. Tools>Options>Mail Setup. Check
"Send immediately when connected".

I know that Outlook can send immediately if it is running. What I want
to know is why I must have Outlook running at al times just to get
proper email functionality with third-party or even same party
applications. It seems a bit ridiculous to me. It already opens the
email editor, how hard could it have been to have it actually send the
email?
