Recently e-mail messages I have been sending from my
hotmail account in Outlook Express have been arriving very

the problem might be. Thank you.

In the headers of the message received by your recipient (you'll need to
get a copy of the headers from your recipient), check the timestamps in
the Received headers to see where the delay occurred. Could be Hotmail
didn't send it out until long after you submitted your message to get
sent. Could be the target mail server was down or unreachable and
Hotmail had to retry for a long time before the target mail server
became responsive. If the next Received header after the ones for
Hotmail shows it got the message immediately after you submitted it and
Hotmail sent it immediately, the rest of whatever was in the delivery
path is not under your control nor under Hotmail's control.

Sharon,

I've just using Outlook Express to send messages from my Hotmail account.
Several e-mails have arrived late. I have been wondering the same thing.
Just hearing about one other person with this problem convinces me that this
is a problem. I wonder if there is an explanation or fix--otherwise I will
have to go back to the web interface....

I think it might be the SMTP server that you are using.. Which is causing
the delay in the sending of your emails..

Check the timestamps in the Received headers to see where is the big
delay. Be sure to account for timezone changes. If you see no big
delay in the timestamps, it is likely your SMTP server batched up a slew
of e-mails and sent them out later, so look at the timestamp of your
local copy in the Sent folder in OE and the first Received header (added
by your SMTP server) to see how long your SMTP server waited before
actually sending it.

Sharon,

The problem IS with OE and Hotmail.

If you look at the Example Header below of one of my tests, you can
see that the message was recevied immediately by
"bay15-dav10.bay15.hotmail.com with DAV" and then nothing happened for
16 hours until the message was "Received: from mail pickup service by
hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC". From there it quickly moved on.

I have been conversing with other people who are having the exact same
problem. We can't find a patter. Hotmail receives fine and generally
works fine when using the web interface.

The help people have been of no help. Two of my messages have not
been answered. The last one took them 1 week to answer. The first
time my question was answered there was a sentence about it being an
internal delay because messages were being queued. Since then they
have been denying the problem (with no reference to an internal
queue).
