I'm pretty sure all y'all don't miss the simple things. For every time I
have posted a question here, I have figured out answers to 15 of my other
questions by lurking thru previous posts. This forum is a gold mine!
I tried your ppa > old suggestion, searching for all *.ppa files on my
system and changing them all to *.old, tried Send to Word again, and I have
never been happier to see a MS error message! (The MS tech I spoke to kept
saying I should at least be getting an error message.)
It asked for the repairer and for the CD's, I put it in, it chugged and
whirled for a while. But when I tried it again, nothing happened. I started
my computer again, tried again, and nothing again (not even an error message).
The first 5 MS agents I spoke to just kept fobbing me off to another
number/someone else. The last fellow did all the work. He said he'd call me
today after he "checked his resources". I'll let you know what he says.
cheers,
karen

Wow. I'm not glad they're having problems and so you don't have it solved
yet, but will admit I'm glad to know it wasn't something simple we missed
here.
Did we (or the technician) disable all your PPT add-ins? (*.PPA files --
rename them to *.old)

Here's the tangibles of what happened (after being transferred to six
different agents and 2 hours on the phone):
- reinstalled MS Office (from CD > Add or Remove Feature > Run All from My
Computer);
- hit F8 on startup to start system in SafeMode;
- uninstalled/removed Spybot (my freeware spywear program);
- uninstalled/removed Norton Antivirus
After each item, we attempted to Send to Word again, each time with the
same
result. The agent finally said he would have to check with his resources,
and possibly we would need to re-install all of Office (which would muck
up
my Outlook) so he's going to check and call me tomorrow. The mystery
deepens...

Nah, you can leave the Norton Office plug-in DLL disabled. You're still
protected because Norton scans files when you open them anyway. If you
go
back to the PPT FAQ about it, there's a link to a Microsoft
knowledgebase
article that probably links to a Symantec article where you can read
about
it. The upshot is that the Office plug-in is extraneous and causes more
problems than it's worth.
I'm bummed we couldn't get this working for you. Definitely time to call
MS
Product Support! I know I'm not the only one who will be interested in
knowing what finally resolves it for you if you want to post back with
the
results.
Good luck with it!

Hi EchoS,
Thx a mint for so much of your time and help (and thorough
info/descriptions
and good natured manner) - it is GREATLY appreciated.
Unfortunately, even your crossed fingers could not make that dialog
box
show.
I enabled the function in NAV, put in the full path of the file name,
and
was successful in executing that command in RUN. (It seems to only
work
on
the first file - I tried one was successful, tried the other was not
successful, then rebooted, disabled/enabled NAV and tried the second
file
path first and was successful, tried the first path next and it
failed.)
However, when I tried to Send to Word, I got the same result of a
couple
of
seconds of egg-timer cursor and then nothing.
I guess this is the end of the line...thx again for the effort! (=
One last thing, do I need to "undo" the run command for the rest of
NAV/Office to work "like it's supposed to"?
cheers,
karen

Ah, we ran into this the other day. You might go into Norton and
enable
the
Office plug-in before you do this. That seemed to allow the other
person
with this problem to disable the DLL with the regsvr32 command. It
used
to
be that you often had to disable the DLL via regsvr32 command, but
Symantec
may have changed (fixed) that in the more recent Norton AV versions,
and
now
disabling through NAV really does disable it.
Anyway, you should be able to put the whole path to the file in the
regsvr32
thing. I'd do it for both copies of the DLL on your system.
So, it would be something like this
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
AntiVirus\officeav.dll"
Crossing my fingers!

Hi again EchoS,
Thx a mint for the link and info I tried the first part (NAV
disable
'Enable
Office Plug-in") but no luck.
I tried to do the second part but when I clicked OK I rec'd the
error
msg:
"LoadLibrary("OFFICEAV.DLL") failed - The specified module could
not
be
found"
I did a Windows Explorer search and it shows there are 2 of these
files on
my system (in capital letters). I'm not familiar with "registry"
at
all.
What should I do so the "regsvr32..." command will find the file?
Thx a mint for your many thorough and kind replies!!
cheers,

Hi Echos
Yes, I have Norton Antivirus 2004 installed and do a full
system
scan
everyday.
and the link is...
Norton has an Office plug-in that can wreak havok with opening
various
Office files. Disabling the software itself isn't what you want
to
do --
you
need to disable the actual Office plug-in, and sometimes you
actually
have
to disable the associated DLL, also.
So head here
Norton Anti-Virus and Office
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm
and have a read. (You can skip the links there to the external
information
for now if you want.)
Disable the plug-in ("In NAV go to Options. In the Miscellaneous
section
turn off 'Enable Office Plug-in.'"). Try Send to Word again. If
that
doesn't
work, then disable the DLL. (Click Start, click Run and type
this:
regsvr32
/u "\officeav.dll" Then click OK) Try Send to Word again.
If it works, we're in business! If it doesn't, then it really is
time to
call Microsoft.
Cheers,
Echo
