send to address in new message

in the past when i would click on new message and it would bring up the
untitled message with the send to buttons when i clicked on the To...
button the names in my contact list would be sorted by first name, then last
name, somehow it has switched from last name to first name, does anyone know
how to get it back to first name, last name and the reason that this
happened? thanks for your help in this matter
