I had been using Office 2003 beta, and after deciding not
to purchase at this time, I reinstalled Office XP. When I
go to Mail Setup/Send Receive I get an error
message "operation failed". I can manually send/receive,
but cannot retrieve mail automatically. Any ideas.

If you use the Test Account Settings, do you get any error reports?

I have a similar problem. The automatic Send/Receive does not operate, and
using the Send/Receive toolbar icon or F9 key gives a message that "The
operation failed.". I have three POP3 email accounts (one LAN and two
dial-up) and a Hotmail account. I can send/receive by selecting each
account separately using Tools/Send-Receive/1, 2, 3 or 4, but not 5 "All
Accounts" or "Send and Receive All F9".

I have found Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 312354 but am reluctant to
follow the procedure of creating a new profile, because I am not sure that
the article refers to this particular problem. The symptom quoted in the
article has an error message "The operation failed. An object could not be
found.".

BTW the Test Account Settings work fine.

I followed the procedure in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 312354, and it
has fixed my problem. Send/receive now works fine.

I found it easy to do. After I created the new profile, I tested it by
setting up one of my email accounts (cable broadband) and then imported the
remaining POP3 accounts from Outlook Express.

The new profile had created "outlook1.pst". I imported all the personal
folders from outlook.pst into the new profile. My contacts, calendar,
emails, etc were intact in the new profile. I then removed the old
"Outlook" profile.
