I've found that although I have Word set as my email editor in Outlook, when I'm in Word and choose "Send as" from my right-click
menu, it ignores my Word and sends as text only. Help please !

This is normal behavior. That command bypasses Outlook's mail settings
because it uses simple MAPI. You always have the option of creating a
message and inserting the Word document.

I understand that the behavior is normal, but can I change that? I am trying to create a solution for a situation where there is an
automated letter-creating template in Word, which is picked up by Outlook when using the "send with Word as email editor" option.
The Word template already exists and creates letters, but we want these letters to go out as Rich text, or possibly as pdf (assuming
that I have the full Acrobat program and SDK). In short, how can I change this behavior?

No, you cannot change the behavior of that menu command.

A good alternative might be to add a macro to your template that saves the
current document, creates a new Outlook message, attaches the saved document
and displays the message. Creating a message with your Word template is the
hard part. I'm not sure how you might have that set up.
