i wish to sell my computer, but wish to get it back to original state (the
state in which i bought it). how do i go about doing this without using
system restore?

Hi,

Boot your WinXP CD and start setup. Accept the license agreement (hit F8).
At the point where it offers to repair the existing installation or do a new
install, instead delete the existing system partition. Then create a new one
from the free space, format, and proceed with the installation.

Note: Make sure you have your Product Key handy *before* you begin.

To protect your personal information and data from any future
users of average skills, you should, at the very least, format the
hard drive and reinstall only the OS and those applications whose
licenses you are selling along with the computer. If you wish to do a
more thorough job of protecting your personal data, WipeDrive 2.2.1
(http://www.accessdata.com/Product07_Overview.htm?ProductNum=07) meets
U.S. DoD standards for securely cleaning surplus unclassified hard
drives, and could be used before formatting and reinstalling the OS
and applications.

I suggest if you are skilled in this sort of thin then try booting from a
bootable floppy and do an FDISK and delete the active partition then creat a
new active partition. When you boot with windows CD and do a comlete and new
installation. That is what I do when I sell my old computer, while this works
for me it may work for you also.
