Is anyone out there now???? Can you please help me with
this! I am unable to self ping (hence the network not
working) and this is posing a serious problem for me. I
have been in the books for days and on the site for
hours...and days....I have disabled all firewalls I can
see (unless there is a secret one somewhere!) and have
ran WinSockFix and released the IP...nothing is
working...please help!
Awaiting a response..

First of all do you have a IP at all? If you don't then
your network card or whatever is not properly configured.
Also what type of connection do you have and are you on a
network?

Hi David and thank you for replying.
Am happy to explain (did so a few posts back...sorry for
assuming you would have read). Peer to peer connection
(yes, RJ45 cable is crossed). Both PCs on XP home.
Desktop is host (connecting to dial up modem) Host CAN
ping client (good indication hardware is OK) client can
self ping. Client CANNOT ping host and host cannot self
ping. Client can see GAteway internet (also good) but
cannot communicate. Have disabled all firewalls. IP
adresses are fine (192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.1) subnet
mask are identical to each other. Have ran WinSockFix,
released IP but not working.
Here's a breakthrough...when I attempted to <renew> the
IP (fm MScommand), I get "the operation failed as no
adapter is in state permissible for this operation".
Thanks for helping,

That error message about not being in a permissable
state, is usually just an indication that the NIC is
configured with a static address - not DHCP (obtain
automatically) - therefore there is no lease to
release/renew.
Are you using ICS? - if so, set both machines to obtain
an ip address automatically.

thanks...where and how do I change that?
