selectively control audio volumes in programs

I'm looking for a way to selectively control audio volume levels for each of
the programs installed on my Windows XP Pro based machine. Any ideas if
such can done, or if there is any software out there that can do this?

Do the individual programs ( Media Players....) have volume control
within them ? If not then you'll be forced to work with the Wave and
Master controls on your sound card to find a "Average" output level.
One problem is running a program that has a volume slider and if it's
set above the sound card's setting will raise it to match the application.

My specific problem has to do with using Dragon Naturally Speaking. When
making a correction, it plays back what I said. The volume is way too low
to hear properly if I have the system volume set to a comfortable level. If
I adjust the system volume high enough for me to hear the playback, any
system sound will blast me out of my chair. DNS does not seem to have a way
of controlling the volume individually. I have grown dependant on system
sounds to tell me what is going on and on a timer program (using
text-to-speech) that keeps me on schedule (Karen's Countdown Timer II).
Audio for both are controlled by the same system volume controls. I'm left
with the dilemma of giving up DNS or giving up all system sounds, including
the scheduler.

I have considered whether I might edit all of my system sounds to reduce
their volumes... a lot of work though. And that still doesn't solve my
scheduler problem.

Any comments welcome!

This feature has been introduced in Windows Vista, where when you open a
program which support sounds then Volume Control shows a different tab for
the same program to + or - sound.

That, IMHO, is a really cool feature. Upgrading to Vista is not in the
cards, at least not anytime soon. Still hoping someone out there has
written a program that will give me that feature without the OS upgrade. If
you run across one, let me know.
