Selection color

Is there a way to change the color of the select when you click on a
cell?
I can make a global change from within the OS but I was hoping for a
preference somewhere within Excel.

You mean so that you can see the activecell better?

If yes, you may want to look at Chip Pearson's RowLiner:

Be aware that with this (and most macros), you lose the ability to do Edit|Undo.
