Selecting desktop item

Hi, all of a sudden I can`t select multiple files on the desk top, it`s ok
in other folders. Before out of a list of 20 files I could select one file
then hold the shift key and select five more and just those five would
remain selected, now it only selects the last one.
Any ideas?

Kim, if you have a number of files on your desktop and what to select a
certain number
you can just select the first file then press the Shift key and then
select the last file holding
the Shift key down until selected.
 
Thats what I do and then today it won`t work.

Kim,

What Rich Barry says is correct, but it seems you want to select items one
by one - have I got that right? If so, you need to use <control>, not
<shift>.
