Whether in WinExplorer or My Computer, selecting C drive causes a crash. I
can't access for file maintenance etc. Appreciate any help.

same problem on starting up it used to explorer.exe used to crash on sending
the error report ms's site used to say cannot give any info as ur not updated
to sp2
so i updated to sp2 but its givin me now other problems such as slow d/l speed
also see whether any updates r available for ur os in windows site

Thanks for that. The error report says it's to do with folder
Locals/Temp/(various numbers)appcompat.txt.

This is a Application Compatibility Text file, I believe. So downloading sp2
has caused an incompatibility problem. I tried restoring to before I
downloaded it last Wednesday, but the system won't let me - 'restore to
this/these dates not possible'.

I'll try Roxio's GoBack to see if that will let me.

The report about the appcompat.txt file is a notice that there has been an
error. The .txt file is the report and it contains the error info.

You could open that file in notepad to read its contents (a memory dump) or
use Event Viewer (start> run> eventvwr.msc) to check the Application and
System logs for more detailed error messages.

It's unlikely that an upgrade to a system that has problems will cure
the problems.

Cheers,

Cliff
