selected text wont delete

when i select text (click and drag over it) usually by pressing any buton on
the keyboard it will be deleted and replaced. Now this does not happen (it
just inserts a letter at the beggining of the word). Pressing the delete
button, space or even return still doesnt delete the selected text.

Any ideas because its starting to drive me crazy!
