We are puzzling over this and have almost reached the conclusion that it is
impossible to select lines of text that aren't together using keyboard only
in Word 2003.

Are we right or is there a shortcut key?

That's correct. You can select noncontiiguous text by holding down the
Ctrl key while dragging the mouse, but there's no way to do it
without the mouse... unless you can formulate a Find expression that
matches all of the desired text (possibly using wildcards) and you
check the "Highlight all items found" box.
