Please be gental I am not a computer wiz

I am running XP home on 3 dells, we ran the networking wizard on all three picking the other option and then these computer conect to the internet through hub

When looking into my network neiborhood you only see your computer no others but when you check printers you can see all the printers and print to anyone of the printers from any computer

This seems to be a common problem can someone please provide answers that a simpleton can understand

notes: all computers xp home, all computers firewalls disabled all computer have Client for MSN Networks/file and printer sharing/Qos packert scheduler/internet protocol.

Search your network for the other machines by their name. If they are found, they should show up in your network window. XP is screwy sometimes.

If your PCs get to the 'net via a hub, rather than a router, that may
be your problem. See: http://home.comcast.net/~bobwbsgs/homenet.txt

File sharing won't work until you mark folders for sharing. For starters,
create a folder (not C:) with a short simple folder name and share it with
a short simple share name.

It is easier if you only use TCP/IP, not NetBEUI or IPX/SPX.

Bob

You hit the nail on the head, we are using #1 - dsl/model/hub/computer and we do not have a static ip service

We checked our subnets and yes they were different. Funny thing is we have no problem sharing printers

So how do we get to computers to share files as easily as it shares the printers

PS we have enabled Netbios over tcp/i

Many thanks for all your help.

Wait while my crystal ball powers up ... there. Now I can clearly see
your network <g>

Without a router at your end of the DSL wire, your PC uses DHCP to ask
your ISP for an IPA, and it grants one. Some ISPs only grant one IPA
per customer, some grant a couple for the same price, some only grant
one without paying extra; but, the IPAs your PCs get are not guaranteed
to be in the same IP subnet - which makes sharing files difficult.

If you replace the hub with a router (with its DHCP server enabled),
then the DHCP requests will be granted by your LAN's router, and all
PCs will be in the same IP subnet.

Routers are pretty cheap, and in addition to creating a single IP subnet
for your LAN, they provide a decent inbound firewall.
