Is there a utility which will test a set of selected newsservers to
see which is the fastest one to download individual articles from?

Preferably freeware.

BACKGROUND: With newsreaders like Xnews it is easy to choose which
newsserver to get headers and/or bodies from.

I want to know which of my usual newsservers to switch to when my
default newsserver is too slow in getting article bodies.

it is true my FAQ does not speak about speed.... if you are xnews
you can test all nntp servers and see yourself the speed

I think the O.P. meant some kind of benchmarking software. Could be done
easily enough from a shell account I suppose.
