I have Windows XP Pro only installed once on the C drive but lately I see
upon sign on a stop and a decision has to be made:

Windows XP Pro

or

Windows XP Pro #1.

Either one works and I see no difference.

When I go to Msconfig and look at the boot sequence I can see both there too
but no way to delete one.

My question is this: How did they get there and what should I do to delete
one of them?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then read similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT

Thanks very much.

Msconfig I had used before but it did not allow for DELETE but the second
idea by you worked fine.
