Every since I uploaded the XP security update files on
2/4/2004, my computer freezes. Is there a reason? What
is being used, that wasn't there before? I am
getting very frustrated, because in the middle of an
email, my computer just stops. I have no choice but turn
it off, wait a min. and then turn it on again. And then
to have to remember what I had just typed in the email
that was lost!

I have Windows XP Home Edition 5.01.2600 on a Sony
notebook with 512RAM and Service pack 1. I have never
had a problem for the past 2 years, since I bought the
notebook, until I uploaded the Security Updates, and
wonder what on earth or 'in the new computer updates' is
causing this 'freeze' of my system. I wish I had never
updated!
I called Microsoft Windows Update, where I received the
updates, to report a problem and they say I should call
XP Home Edition specialist.

I don't feel I should have to pay for MSN's advise, when
it is the Windows Update who created my problem.
Does anyone have any advise?
Is there a glitch in the new security updates? Is more
memory being used, which can cause my notebook
to 'freeze'?

Thanks to anyone with some help!

Diana-

I concur with your disenchantment with now being
faced with fees for technical assistance from Microsoft.
In a way we have all contributed to this by insisting
that Microsoft be the sole supplier of our operating
systems. A MONOPOLY, is the result. Who else are you
going to talk to? I would suggest Linux as an alternative
OS, which now is being taken seriously by IBM and is the
preferred operating system for Sun Microsystems. Sun is
about the only company that I know of that could give
Microsoft a run for their money, unless the problem with
Microsoft is beyond repair. In which case, we the users
will suffer.

Hi Diana,

Just to be curious, do you have anti-virus software installed and up to date
on the laptop? How about a personal or hardware firewall? With the rate that
new viruses/worms are hitting the Internet it's possible that you could be
infected by something (just a thought). Are you using a web-based email
service (Hotmail, Yahoo etc...) when the problem occurs or is this happening
when you use Outlook Express? Does the problem only occur when you're
connected to the Internet/network, or does this problem occur regardless of
network status? If your system is virus free, you might want to try and
uninstall the security update if possible. You'll need to figure out which
update to uninstall based on the date and use the Add/Remove Programs option
under Control Panel. You should be able to access that information by going
to Windows Update and selecting the "View Installation History" link. If all
else fails, you could try doing a system restore back to a point before
2/4/04. Select Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System
Restore.
