I had a fairly severe failure and began receiving a message at boot telling
me that the \windows\system32\config\system file was missing or corrupt.
After a bit of searching I decided to try the procedure in KB307545. I got
to a point where I had to get access to the system volume information folder
and was denied access. There is a link to KB309531 detailing how to get
around this problem. In attempting to do this, it tells you to go to
properites for the folder and click on the security... which is not there.

Suggestions?

thanks, that wll do it.

Can't use safe mode with a corrupted registry.

Don, from the command prompt you should be accessing the C:\Windows\repair
folder, not the System Volume Information folder.

Addendum for Don:

To access the SVI folders, use the CACLS command as listed in 309531

Rick, he is using the prescribed solution provided by Microsoft located
at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. I have ran into this problem
numerous of times. It is a pain to fix but he is one the correct path.
Thanks for your assistance.

Yeah, that one's a bitch (BTDT), but with a corrupted registry he'll have to
work from the Recovery Console as Windows won't load in any mode. To access
the SVI folder and change permissions will require use of cacls as he won't
be able to load safe mode and access the folder's properties.

Once he replaces the corrupt SYSTEM issue, he will be able to boot into
safe mode, perform the necessary fix, and perform a windows system
restore. He should be fine if he follows the directions; barring any
other issues. I hate this error... It really does suck.
