Jeremy

I am getting 13 new XP machines. Is there a way to setup the default
settings on XP so that everytime I add a user to a machine that user has the
defaults I want? Like starting with XP classic shell, etc...

Also using grpedit.msc I have done everything I can to prevent users from
changing and installing wallpapers since we have problems with users
installing non professional in a public professional environment. The way
they are getting around this is in explorer right clicking on a jpg or
picture and saying set as desktop background. In gpedit.msc I have set
under desktop and under display to not allow active desktop, only allow
bitmapped wallpaper, prohibit changes to active desktop. Is there another
setting or a reg setting I can change to stop this?

Hi

Set up a user the way you want it. Copy this user's profile to the
"Default User" profile folder (you need to do this copy with another
user that the one you set up as a "template").

HOW TO: Create a Custom Default User Profile

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your posting and thanks for Torgeir's help. Torgeir has answered
your first question. For the second question, you can refer to the
following article:

327998 You Can Change Desktop Wallpaper Setting After Administrator Selects
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=327998

To resolve this issue, specify an Active Desktop wallpaper setting in Group
Policy. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, and then type "gpedit.msc" (without the
quotation marks).

2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand User Configuration, expand
Administrative Templates, expand Desktop, and then click Active Desktop.

3. Double-click Active Desktop Wallpaper.

4. On the Setting tab, click Enabled, type the path to the desktop
wallpaper that you want to use, and then click OK.

Please feel free to let us know if anything is unclear or if you need
further assistance.

hello, i think that the core of your problem is the
fact that you allow different users to share a common
profile. This is not ment to be that way.
OK you can share the account but not the profile.
If i were you (along with the Group Policies) I
would setup a central mandatory profile. (centrally located -
shared by all systems - deleteted on logoff)

hope this helps,
aagis.

Thanks William and Torgeir for the information. I will try both those. On
the pc's I have chosen a wallpaper they can't change its the ones I left set
to the default wallpaper.

I am getting 13 new XP machines. Is there a way to setup the default
settings on XP so that everytime I add a user to a machine that user
has
the
defaults I want? Like starting with XP classic shell, etc...

Also using grpedit.msc I have done everything I can to prevent users
from
changing and installing wallpapers since we have problems with users
installing non professional in a public professional environment. The
way
they are getting around this is in explorer right clicking on a
jpg
or
picture and saying set as desktop background. In gpedit.msc I
have
set
under desktop and under display to not allow active desktop, only allow
bitmapped wallpaper, prohibit changes to active desktop. Is there
another
setting or a reg setting I can change to stop this?

Today, I did get to try the copy profile on a new employee, and her computer
copying the settings from the now ex employee to the new employee's userid.
Worked great and will work for what I was planning to do when my 13 computer
come in. So thanks for the help.

As far as I've been able to test, that was the one piece I was missing. I
haven't tried the setup a default profile then copy it yet, since my 13 PC's
haven't arrived yet.

Hi Jeremy,

Thanks for your posting and thanks for Torgeir's help. Torgeir has
answered
your first question. For the second question, you can refer to the
following article:

327998 You Can Change Desktop Wallpaper Setting After Administrator
Selects
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=327998

To resolve this issue, specify an Active Desktop wallpaper setting in
Group
Policy. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, and then type "gpedit.msc" (without the
quotation marks).

2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand User Configuration, expand
Administrative Templates, expand Desktop, and then click Active
Desktop.

3. Double-click Active Desktop Wallpaper.

4. On the Setting tab, click Enabled, type the path to the desktop
wallpaper that you want to use, and then click OK.

Please feel free to let us know if anything is unclear or if you need
further assistance.
