A little background...I was reinstalling windows XP (upgrade) on my system (my isp suggested i do this as I was having some problems with my computer) and the installation could not complete - phoned up DEll to see if they could help, but to no avail (unfortunately didn't have internet access at this point), and was told that I needed to re-install windows. Of course, i didn't take a backup before starting this process (lesson learned), so a reinstall would have meant losing all data. Boiught a second drive (will use for backup in future) and installed it with XP, made old drive slave. Works perfectly I can now find all data on old drive, except I cannot access the most important fold under Documents and Settings, the folder named Jeff tells me access denied (this was the administrator user). I did not have a password or any additonal limitations put on this user, but I cannot access it. HELP. What can I do so that I can copy the contents of this folder...

Check this article;

Folder

Hope this helps!

Unfortunately, while this at first glance is promising when I try 1c that is not an option that is even available to me on my computer. Aditionally for #3, I do not have the choice of a security tab only General, Sharing and Customize. By the way this is Windows XP Home Edition

1. Turn off Simple File Sharing:
a. Click Start, and then click My Computer
b. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
c. Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties
3. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears
4. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab
5. In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box
6. Click OK.
