How do I disable Security Policies on my Notebook. It used to be on a company LAN but now I use it as a stand-alone. The LAN admninistrator disabled the ability to update XP online. I would like to update it via my modem.

Hi

To enable Window Update again, try the following:

Using regedit.exe, check if the registry value "NoWindowsUpdate"
in the following key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
is set to 1, if so, change it to 0 and reboot your computer.

If that value was not set, or the change didn't help, follow the instructions
here:

Go to administrative tools throught the control panel and click on local security policy scroll through the different security settings to find what you need to enable. Also are you logging on with an account with administrative rights, is you laptop still joined to the domain or has it been changed to workgroup?
