help i have a security message on a frequently used web
page. how do i remove it and what are the consequences.
(AN ACTIVE X CONTROL ON THIS PAGE IS NOT SAFE YOUR
CURRENT SECURITY SETTINGS PROHIBIT, RUNNING UNSAFE
CONTROLS ON THIS PAGE AS A RESULT THIS PAGE MAY NOT BE
DISPLAYED AS INTENDED)
FROM AN INEXPERIENCED USER

Not to worry . . . this message just means that your security settings are
prudently high enough to prevent activeX controls being downloaded and/or
executed on your computer. You can accept this state of affairs . . . or if
you trust the site, place it in the Trusted Zone where security restrictions
are not so high (TOOLS-INTERNET OPTIONS, SECURITY tab). Alternatively, you
can set the running of activeX controls to PROMPT instead of DISABLE in the
Internet Zone. That way you get a message asking if you want to run the
control.

There are four zones there:
- Internet Zone (the default for all sites not explicitly assigned to
another zone)
- Local Intranet (for locations on your local network if you have one)
- Trusted (for sites you explicitly TRUST and are willing to allow material
from them to execute on your computer, i.e., Microsoft Update)
- Restricted (where you place sites you want to view, but don't want them
trying to install and run programs or badger you endlessly with popups.
Warez and porn sites come to mind here.)

There is a fifth zone called My Computer, but it doesn't play into this
discussion.
