when I run a NORTON security check it tells me that my
computer is vulnerable for attacks. The only thing I can
detect is that PORT # 5000, UPnP (Universal Plug and
Play) stays open all the time.
Is it "normal" for this port to stay open all the time?
If not, how do I close this port or take other measures
to safeguard my computer from possible attacks?

When it comes to security Steve Gibson (www.grc.com)
Knows what hes doing That program Rick steered you to is
well worth a look
To disable UPNP (do not confuse this with pnp, plug and
play) open control panel and click on admin tools and
then services scroll down to upnp right click on it and
select properties if it is running select stop and then
disable. This is a huge security hole and should be
disabled for home users. While your in there check out
this site for other services you can disable. If you do
disable several you might want to write down what you did.
