Securing the network

Hi,

I'm worried that my network will be at risk. I have a broadband connection
wired to a wireless router. I have two PCs connected to the router. I'm happy
that with the wireless security. I want to share files between the two PCs
via a shared workgroup but what is to stop a hacker on the internet accessing
files?

Any insights as to how to do secure file sharing with an always on internet
connection would be appreciated.

Thanks.......but I'm happy with the wireless security. What I don't
understand is how to do secure file sharing between two PCs via a switch/hub
that has an always on internet connection. ie if I setup a workgroup to share
files, what is to stop anyone from accessing them via WWW?

Malke,

The first two references are good. I have to question some of George Ou's
thoughts though.

Disable DHCP: This is much more of waste of time than it is a security break.

Here George leaves out half of the best advice.

Disable DHCP, and assign fixed addresses to all computers on the LAN. Put
strong personal firewalls on each computer (whether wired or wirelessly
connected). Many personal firewalls filter only on ip address, so dynamic
addresses won't work.

I also think twice about the whole MAC address filtering issue. MAC address
filtering may be a waste of time in the long run, but if it cuts down on the
volume of traffic hitting the more robust filters, it's not a bad thing, at
least for a small LAN. And it's easy to implement.

I like my article (under construction).

Nick,

Do you have a switch/hub, or a NAT router, providing the connection sharing?

If you have just a switch/hub, please disconnect immediately and get a NAT
router, and a personal firewall on each computer. A NAT router, though, is just
the outer layer in your necessary defense. Practice layered security:
