I have a Window XP Pro, my secretary has Windows 98 and
my brother has Windows XP, all three computers networked
peer to peer.

My secretary now has to put a password in whereas before
she didn't have to.

The password dialogue says:

"You must supply a passord to make this connection.
Password:

Resource \\mycomputer\IPC$"

What can I do. I have created new user accounts and
added the same passwords, but this same dialogue keeps
comming up asking for the password and this cryptic IPC$
which has never appeared before.

Any ideas?

I posted a similar plea on 4/16 was graciously offered
a solution, but to no avail.

Many thanks,

Beau Cooper

Are you having her log into her W98 with the MS client
using a name that corresponds to an account defined on
the two XPs that she will access ??
IPC$ is a "share" used for InterProcess Communication"
including the inital phases of authentication when access
some other share from that machine.

When your XP has the Guest account disabled access and
anonymous access shut off (both are good) access to IPC$
can only be with an account the machine hosting tthat IPC$
recognizes.

If she has logged in with the same name and password as
are used for her account on the sharing machine, and her IE
is configured to allow Windows integrated authentication
for the intranet zone, and the sharing machine is recognized
as being in the intranet zone, then she should get right in.

If you value your documents, remember that while on the
W98 there is no security exercised over your docs.
