Second instance of IE crashes on XP

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP1 with IE 6.0. The first
instance of IE works fine. When I run a second instance of IE and try
to connect to a website, it crashes ("Internet Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience."). It doesn't matter what URL I access for the second
IE, it always crashes. I tried reinstalling/repairing IE per the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles.

318378 How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express in Windows XP

315341 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows
XP

None of them solved my problem. I'd hate to have to reinstall XP.

Any ideas? Thanks, SM

First eliminate any scumware.

Problem solved, turns out that winshow.dll spyware was installed.
Removal fixed the problem.

I think this is a microsoft problem as I see quite a few
people having difficulties. Mine is doing the exact same
thing and it started this weekend. I will keep checking
as I don't think it is our computer. Dave
