I am running XP sp2 on my machine and recently hard drive #2 quit. It
contains only photo's that I would like to recover. I suspect it is my
machine and not the hard drive itself. Can I slide this in on my other
machine in place of the existing hard drive #2? I tried it and of course the
system does not identify drive #2 even though one existed there before. What
can I do to read this drive? Any help would be appreciated.

If it's not recognized in the BIOS in a different computer as an
installed slave drive, assuming it's cabled and jumpered correctly, then
most likely the drive died. Hopefully you have a backup of all the
important data.

If the drive does not show up in "Disk Management" then you are "out of luck."
The drive itself has failed. You can try to locate a disk rescue utility or
if you can afford it, send it out to a hard drive recovery company.
