Second disk problems

Hi

My system was running smoothly with 2 120GB WD1200 drives since February.
Then the second drive vanished two days ago.

When it boots up the Bios detect the drive but Windows does not. A rescan in
Management it appears under disk drives but not in My Computer. Checking
error messages revealed a message reporting a bad sector on the drive.

Yesterday I start chkdsk /f /v on the drive and 14 hours later it appeared
to be OK. I could access it. When I booted this morning it was gone again
and a bad sector message showed up again. If I try to get properties in
Management it just hangs.

This drive is only used for backup and scratch files but how do I reformat
it? I presume I will have to fdisk first? But will that work if Windows does
not recognise the drive? I tried going into safe mode but it hangs after
loading MUP.SYS so I can only start in normal mode. I have no floppy so
utilities from WD cannot be used....

Use WDC software - datalifeguard tools to diagnose the drive and partition
format. It may have came with the drives or you can download here. Note
WDC may be having trouble with their site right now.

I downloaded lifeguard but it only offers the first drive to test. Other
tools on their site need a floppy disk drive which I do not have!

You can try the online diagnostic if you wish. If Windows does not
recognise the drive then likely this won't either. Can't hurt though.

With the CD-ROM supplied with each of my retail WDC drives I can boot from
the CD-ROM to access DataLifeGuard through a DOS interface.

In the above case can you right click on the drive and assign it a letter??
If so then it should appear in My Computer - Start DLG Tools and scan the
drive for errors.

I trust you have functional and updated firewall, antivirus and have scanned
for adware, malware etc.with programs such as Spybot S & D, Lavasoft's
Adaware, and SpywareBlaster.

Best I can suggest without you having a bootable cd from WDC or salvaging a
floppy drive from another computer. Good luck.

Use WD's Lifeguard diagnostics on the drive. It will test it using PCDOS.

This could be a warranty thing. Or a loose cable etc....
