Searching inside files

I have several files that can be opened with notepad (the extensions are
..001, .002, etc). In Windows 98 and Windows 2000 I am able to do a search
that contains text that's in one of those files (in the search window I put a
word in the "containing text" line) and the file will be found. In Windows XP
the files are not found (using "A word or phrase in the file"). It will work
with Word doc's and Excel spreadsheats, but not my *.001 files. Any ideas on
how I can get XP to search inside those files?

I use an alternative search tool for finding text strings, FileLocator Pro
by MythicSoft. This program is shareware but they also provide a freebie,
Agent Ransack. http://www.mythicsoft.com/default.aspx

standard "problem". XP only searches inside files that have a "known"
extension, for which it has a filter. SP1 (and 2) added many new filters
to cover lots of file types, but your .001/.002 etc are not included
(obviously!).

there is a way to make XP seach all files, google for "xp search unknown
files" (without the quotes) for more info.

Most people call it a bug. I call it nuts. What is this nonsense for? Why
isn't there an easy straightforward way (checkbox) to switch it off ??
