Default settings of Vista search does not search the program files folders.
In fact Vista will try and convince you to not enable it to index the
program files folders. If you are the slightest bit "techy" this is not the
way you want Vista search to work. It will not find files that you know are
there. You can muddle through the advanced settings each time you search and
tell Vista search to search everywhere, even un-indexed areas. I find that
cumbersome.
I enabled "almost" all folders everywhere to be indexed. Then you have to
check which extensions are indexed. Some common extensions are not indexed
by default. (ini and log are two) You can enable indexing of these and other
extensions. After you make these changes there will be a lot of disk
activity while Vista indexes these new areas.
I don't know the downside of doing this other than a much larger index.
The other option is to turn off indexing and always do the advanced search
everywhere. When I search for a file I expect to find that file if it exists
on my drive(s).
Thanks for the reply.
I am looking at the 'Indexing Options'
Under 'Included Locations' I've got 'Start Menu' and 'Users'.
The heading also has 'Exclude' and opposite 'Users', 'Default'.
I don't understand why 'Default' appears under the 'Exclude' column.
Can you enlighten me?
